Bulletin 181 - 2008 September 15

  1. CSIRO Cluster re-fresh and changeover
  2. CSIRO Old usernames
  3. Quotas and flushing on $WORKDIR areas
  4. CSIRO license serving

Note: "CSIRO" items can apply to BoM users of cherax and burnet

1. CSIRO Cluster re-fresh and changeover

The refreshed burnet cluster is available for testing. Existing users can now connect to burnet-usr.hpsc.csiro.au (the new head node). The refreshed system has a completely new filesystem and during the test phase you will start with an empty home directory (apart from 'dot' files). There are only 14 32-bit nodes available until the changeover. Software on the refreshed system is listed at: http://intra.hpsc.csiro.au/user/pkginfoweb/ under: "NEW burnet-usr.hpsc.csiro.au - head node"

Please use the opportunity to log in and test.

The clusters burnet and nelson will be unavailable from 09:00 on Saturday 20th September for most of the weekend.

On the Saturday, the clusters will be re-cabled to allow the remainder of the existing nodes to connect to the new infrastructure.

On Sunday 21st, the cluster nodes will be integrated into the refreshed system. A final copy of the home directories from the old system will be copied to /system/oldhome. Instructions will be provided for moving files from there into the new home directories. After a few weeks, old files not accessed will be archived.

From Monday 22nd September, users logging into burnet, will get the new head node - burnet-usr, separated from the management node and fileserver nodes used for systems management.

The old cluster will remain active for some time (as burnet-old) and the CMIS CM group nodes (blade85-110) will remain in the old system for now.

Nelson will be turned off. For some time it will be possible to turn it back on and access the old file-systems but there will be no compute nodes.

2. CSIRO Old usernames

With the changeover to the new Altix, there were problems encountered by some users with the pre-2004 usernames of the form csabc coming back to life.

We propose finally removing these usernames on Wednesday 17th September for those users who have corresponding NEXUS usernames. Special usernames for CSIRO collaborators without NEXUS identifiers will remain.

No changes in ownership or permissions of files are expected. If you notice problems after the change, please contact us.

Please ensure that no scripts are accessing old paths with constructs like ~csxyz/bin/script.sh .

3. Quotas and flushing on $WORKDIR areas

Flushing has taken place recently on several $WORKDIR file systems. - keep an eye on files like $WORKDIR/../flush.status

As well, on burnet recently, the flushing script flushed all it could down to files only 7 days old, but could not recover sufficient space.

We over-allocate on quotas on these areas, on the assumption that not all users will use their full quotas at once.

Pressure on burnet $WORKDIR will be relieved shortly, but in the interim, we may move to reduce soft-quotas on areas like this, to about 50% of the hard quota. This will allow users to continue usage up to their hard quota, but will be able to exceed the soft-quota limit for only seven days, before being locked out. This will allow short-term usage of large areas, but will encourage users not to make continuous usage to the detriment of others.

4. CSIRO license serving

CSIRO license servers are currently being migrated and consolidated. For software on cherax and burnet, the transition should be transparent.

Some of the licenses are available to use on remote and desktop systems. Such systems may need updating with the new license server details.

The software affected includes:

  • matlab and the available toolboxes
  • Intel compilers
  • Totalview debugger
  • Splus
  • Mathematica
  • Comsol
  • Accelrys Materials Studio
  • cplex

Please contact us if you use any of this software with CSIRO ASC licenses on computers outside of HPCCC.

The traffic lights at http://intra.hpsc.csiro.au/traffic/servicestatus.xml and http://www.hpccc.gov.au/hpccc/system_status/ will shortly be updated to provide accurate information about the number of licences in use for each of the above items of software, through the 'more' button.
