1. cherax: handling large files

We have encountered problems recently with very large files on cherax.

One user created 14 500+ Gbyte files in a week, and although the system coped (just), these stressed the system, and caused very long delays for other users. A recall of just one of these files required about 5 hours for the owner and other users.

As a consequence, we plan to impose limits of 100 Gbyte per file, unless prior arrangements are made.

To help enforce this, we will set limits of 100 Gbyte per file in the cherax batch system on all queues on 18th November.

If you are working with large files, please contact us for advice on effective use of the dmls, dmget and touch commands, to avoid major disruption to your work and that of other users.

As well, we will add a user space quota of 4 Tbyte (out of 6.6 Tbyte available) on /cs/datastore.

2. Intel Compiler version 10 update

The -fast compiler switch should be used with care. It will enable optimizations specific to the latest CPU, resulting in programs that may not run on previous generation CPUs.

The following advice has been provided by Intel:

"While this option enables other options quickly, the specific options enabled by this option might change from one compiler release to the next. Be aware of this possible behavior change in the case where you use makefiles."

For burnet use -ipo, -O3, -no-prec-div, -static, and -xP

For cherax use -ipo, -O3, and -static

3. CSIRO ASC Software License Management

ASC Software licenses have been migrated to a new license server license1-mel.vm.csiro.au

For software installed on non-ASC machines the license information will need to be updated to migrate to the new license server.

Licenses previously being served from b6.hpsc.csiro.au will not be accessible from 1st December. Affected software includes:

  • Accelrys Materials Studio
  • COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Intel C++ and FORTRAN Compilers
  • Mathematica
  • MATLAB

If you are using any of the above listed software on non-ASC hosts, please contact the help desk on (03) 9669-8103 or hpchelp@csiro.au for instructions to change to the new license server.

4. CSIRO ASC Software on cherax
  • COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5

To find out what's new in this release of COMSOL visit http://www.comsol.com/products/news/3.5/

To access this version of COMSOL do:

    module load comsol/3.5

Note: This software can also be installed on your local workstation 'myhost'. See the software map for details -
    http://nf.apac.edu.au/facilities/software/software.php?software=COMSOL+Multiphysics&site=CSIRO&from_site=CSIRO

  • NCO 3.9.4

This version of NCO (NetCDF Operators) will become the default version on 24th Nov. Previously the default was version 2.9.8

  • CDAT 5.0

Climate Data Analysis Tools (CDAT) has been installed on cherax.

To access this version of CDAT do:

    module load cdat/5.0.beta1

  • Intel C and FORTRAN version 8.x will be removed from the system from 24th Nov.

6. CSIRO ASC Docklands Network Outage

The network link to ASC Docklands will be offline on Saturday 15 November 2008 from 22:00 AEDT until 23:59 AEDT for a switch upgrade to increase capacity.

This will disrupt communications between ASC Docklands and the Bureau systems, as well as other CSIRO sites (including NCI NF and iVEC).

Jobs running on hosts within the CSIRO network at Docklands may fail if they try to access other hosts, e.g. rcp commands from mawson to cherax.

7. burnet-mgt node

The system management node for the burnet cluster has had a number of failures recently, culminating in a file system corruption.

Restorations were in place at the time of writing.

During outages, batch jobs continue to run on the compute blades, but new jobs cannot be started.
